‘Lessons learnt’ panel to visit Kilinochchi

The Commission of Inquiry on Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation will hold a meeting with public officials in Kilinochchi this month to make preparations for public sittings later, officials said.

They said the Kilinochchi meeting will be attended by public officials, including Divisional Secretaries and the discussions will focus on modalities and institutional matters ahead of the public hearings that are billed to begin at the end of next month or early September.

The commission will also search for any violations of internationally accepted norms of conduct in such conflict situations, and the circumstances that may have led to such actions, and identify any persons or groups responsible for such acts.

Recommendations would also be made on the nature of compensation to be granted to victims or their dependants who have suffered in this conflict situation.
