A 29-year-old Sri Lankan telecom engineer from Padukka, who had left for Iraq soon after his marriage, was among 29 people who perished in Thursday’s hotel blaze
The body of Suraj Mahesh Galhena is expected be flown to Sri Lanka today, a family member said last night.
Suraj, an old boy of Ananda College, had been working for a leading mobile service provider here before leaving for Iraq in 2008.
Forty one people were also injured in the fire that engulfed the Soma Hotel at Sulaimaniyah city, 270km north of Baghdad, that broke out around 10.30pm.
Telecoms operator Asiacell said expatriate employees from the Philippines and Cambodia were among those killed by the blaze.
Police and hospital officials in Iraq said at least 14 foreigners died in the fire.
Work and investment opportunities have led many foreigners to flock to the Kurdish region in northern Iraq. |
