Awarded doctorate

Suresh de Silva recently obtained his PhD from the University of Rochester, New York, USA in Biochemistry for his thesis entitled "Development of the Herpes Simplex Virus Amplicon vector: Toward Site-Directed Integration of Transgenes within the Human Genome".

The findings of his doctoral research will contribute towards further research into gene therapy for neurodegenerative diseases. He moves to the Ohio State University to pursue his postdoctoral research in HIV transmission. Suresh is an alumni of the University of Colombo, where he obtained his BSc degree in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology with First Class Honours. He captained the university basketball team in 2003 and was a university coloursman.

Launch of the Al-Ameen Law Report Vol. IV

Chief Justice Asoka de Silva will be the chief guest at the launch of the Al-Ameen Law Report Vol. IV at Hotel Ranmuthu at 4 p.m. on Saturday July 24.

The book, Path to Good Life, by lawyer A.H.G. Ameen will also be launched at the ceremony. Supreme Court Justice Saleem Marsoof will be a guest of honour and eminent lawyer Faisz Musthapha will preside at the ceremony while Ikram Mohamed PC and retired High Court Judge U.L.A. Majeed will review the two publications.

The Susan George Pulimood Memorial Oration

The annual Susan George Pulimood Memorial Oration of Visakha Vidyalaya will be held this year on Friday, July 23 at 5.15 p.m. in the Jeremias Dias Hall of the school. This year, the oration will be delivered by Prof. Ira Thabrew ( nee Samarawickrema ), former Senior Professor, Faculty of Medicine, University of Kelaniya and Visiting Professor/Research Fellow, IBMBB, University of Colombo. The subject of the oration will be 'Nature's Secrets for the benefit of Human Health'.

Mary Sweenitha of 349/7, Main Street, Negombo is suffering from end stage renal (kidney) disease and requires an AB+ kidney urgently for a transplantation. She is currently under the care of Consultant Nephrologist Dr. C.A Herath of the Sri Jayewardenepura General Hospital.

Marakshaya at Lumbini Theatre

'Marakshaya' (The Dragon), a Sinhala play directed by Dharmasiri Bandaranayake with a star cast including Yashoda Wimaladharma, Dharmapriya Dias, Janaka Kumbukge, Luxman Mendis and others will go on the boards at the Lumbini Theatre, Havelock Town, Colombo 5 on July 23 at 2.30 p.m. and 6.30 p.m. The original by Russian playwright Yevgeny Scvarts was translated into Sinhala by Cyril C. Perera. The play has been staged around the country from 1985. Jehan Aloysius has done the choreography and Nadika Weligodapola the music for this production.

HFC past pupils hold free health camp

The Past Pupils' Association of Holy Family Convent, Colombo 4, will hold a free Health Camp, 'Give Yourself the Gift of Health' for all past Familians.
