The Kandy Autodrome will come alive with the sound of revving engines and the smell of burning rubber when it plays host to the Mirigama Circuit Race Meet today at 10 am.
Competitive action, which will take place on a nine corner, 1.5 kilometer tarmac track, will see 110 competitors challenging each other throughout 15 events.
Of the 15 races, nine will be for motorcycles while the remaining six will be for cars. There will also be two additional Junior Motorcycle events for young aspiring racers in the under 1 category. Each individual race will feature a unique model of car and bike such as Austin Mini or Honda H.
The meet is expected to draw some of the cream of Sri Lanka’s racing crop such as Upulwan Serasinghe, Surinda Gunewardena, Shamil Athanayake and Lakshika Amarasiri, who will no doubt be looking to hold her own against all the other men on the circuit.
Security for the races will be provided by the Sinha regiment of the army which is housed in a camp not far from the race grounds. Secretary of the Motor Cycle Club, Anil Jayakoddy expects the event to attract up to 10000 frenzied fans. |
