After over a year of anticipation, Google’s first ever (computer) operating system will be complete. Its reported that Chrome OS should be virtually finished by September of this year. Chrome OS will certainly stir the software markets and it will be interesting to see who will be the first to use its branding power.
More or less 5 major computer manufacturers have declared their interest in Chrome OS. This leaves many Google fans hoping that this interest will translate into actual Chrome OS devices. Most probably Dell and Acer will be the two dominant companies in the market.
It is likely that both companies will push to be the first movers in time for the Christmas season. Other companies that have been traditionally allied to Google such as HTC will probably shy away from the Chrome OS market and may rather stick to Android in the mean time. This can be assumed only due to HTC’s silence and seeming lack of interest in Chrome OS.
It is clear that Google is aiming to appease the netbook market as they have time and time again insisted that netbooks should be; and will be the foundation of the operating system’s success. This means that the vast majority of Chrome OS devices will unsurprisingly be netbooks.
There is also the possibility that Chrome OS will be used in tablets which could potentially compete with the Apple iPad. It also goes without saying that many other small scale manufacturers, especially those in China will also churn out a couple of these Chrome OS tablets in much the same way they are doing with Android tablets. It is expected that companies such as Acer, Dell, Asus or even HTC may venture into the Chrome OS tablet market by mid 2011.
It is no secret that Google hopes that Chrome OS will be as great a success as Android. Hence in much the same way that Google spent many millions advertising the Chrome Browser, you could pretty much imagine how much more they will spend to push their operating system toward the consumer.
Netbook sales that had began to hit a peak will begin to re-surge. This will ignite a fierce battle between the two great platforms; tablet vs netbook which will go on until the very end of 2011. Should be exciting ! |
