National swimmer Heshan Unamboowa of Trinity set up three new meet records at the 37th Sri Lanka Schools Swimming Championships held at the Ananda College swimming complex before he left to undergo specialized training in Australia.
This is in preparation for the Youth Olympic Games to be held in Singapore from August 14 to 24. Accompanying him on this training stint was Madhawee Weerathunga of Mahamaya Girls School Kandy. Heshan will be the skipper of the Sri Lanka team at the event.
Heshan is undoubtedly the best choice to lead the first ever Sri Lanka team to the Youth Olympics. He has been dominating the swimming scene in his age group for quite some time now.
Heshan will compete in the100 M the 50 M Backstroke. He is taking part in the competition by virtue of his performances at the World Championships.
Madhawee Weerathunga will feature in the 50 M Freestyle and the 100 M Freestyle. She qualified to take part in the event by her performances in FINA, the controlling body for world swimming, competitions.
Swimming events are to be held at the Singapore Sports School from August 15 to 20.
Sri Lanka will lay a lot of hope on their badminton players – Dilshan Kariyawasam of Ananda College Colombo 10 and Lekha Shehani of Our Lady of Victory Convent Moratuwa.
Dilshan has been selected on sheer merit as he qualified for the event with his fighting performance in the Youth Continental Cup. He will feature in the Men’s Singles event.
Lekha Shehani is a very talented player and the NOC submitted her name for Universality Place and will take part in the Women’s Singles.
Just after Shehani was selected to Sri Lanka’s first ever Youth Olympics team her school Our Lady of Victory Convent, Moratuwa the Principal, Staff and the Sports Committee gave her a warm reception. Shehani is the Games Captain of her school. |
