Colombo and Kandy Rugby Schools clash

The inaugural rugby clash between the combined schools teams of Kandy and Colombo, titled ThePapare Yes FM Dialog All Star Encounter, is due to kick off at Longdon Place on August 7 at 4.30 pm.

The game will serve as a platform for many of the top players from Sri Lanka’s two major rugby breeding grounds to show off their skills. The two teams will be called the Kandy Reds and the Colombo Blues.

ThePapare.com says that the final team selection will only be made on Tuesday by a selection committee compiled by the SLRFU. They further state that to ensure that the best talent is on display, players for the two squads were selected from both the A and B divisions, regardless of how their teams fared.

The game will also serve the purpose of identifying the likely candidates to represent the U20 Sri Lankan squad for the forthcoming Junior Rugby Asiad, which will we held in Bangkok from August 21-28.

British Open victor Sunil key to Lankan success

By David Stephens

A team of five wheelchair tennis players from Sri Lanka, including British Open second draw winner, Sunil Fernando, will fly off to Thailand to participate in the Bangkok Cup from August 4-6, just a few days after the ongoing Malaysian Open draws to a close.

The other players in the contingent are Upali Rajakaruna, D. Gamini, Basanayake, and D.N Pathmasiri. Most of the hope for Sri Lankan success at the tournament will lie with Sunil Fernando, winner of the second singles draw at last week’s British Open Wheelchair Tennis Championships.

Sunil, a former soldier attached to the Gemunu regiment, won the British Open second draw by beating players from India, Israel and Great Britain. In the finals he came on top over Britain’s Peter Moore in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.

Bogambara taboo for Kandy SC

By Shane Seneviratne

The Kandy Sports Club has not been allowed to train at the Bogambara Grounds by security personnel but the Navy rugby team has been training regularly at the ground which is the venue for today’s Caltex Trophy rugby final between Kandy and the Navy.

Up Country Rugby Football Union officials, under whose purview, Kandy SC falls, have been prevented from checking the ground to see whether everything is in order. As a result, the Up Country Rugby Football Union headed by Mohan Samarakoon, has decided to boycott today’s game
