So many people misunderstand LINUX even before they learn it. Most of the people think of it as an operating system when it's not. Linux is an operating system kernel that manages the instructions between the software and hardware; it's something similar to a human brain. We have to make a complete operating system using the Linux kernel and other necessary components so we can install it to a computer and use it, this will be known as a Linux distribution.
A Linux distribution consists of two major parts, the Linux kernel and the GNU (GNU is Not Unix) operating system.
GNU operating system was made by a developer called "Richard Stallman", the father of free software back in 1983 after UNIX copyright in 1979. Since the GNU operating system's default GNU HURD kernel is incomplete developers were looking for a replacement kernel with much better performance, a programmer from Finland called "Linus B. Torvalds" fulfilled the gap by developing the LINUX kernel in 1991.
Today mostly the GNU operating system uses the Linux kernel, where everybody refers as "GNU/LINUX" or simply "LINUX" or otherwise a "Linux Distribution".
Since both the GNU operating system and the Linux kernel are released under GPL (GNU General Public Licence), this declares that users are free to run, copy, distribute, study, change, develop and improve the software.
Because of this there are lots of Linux distributions to choose from, but all the Linux distributions don't feel the same even though they use the same ingredients to develop the distribution, it depends on the developers experience to properly mix the ingredients together.
Most of the modern Linux distribution developers not only combine the GNU operating system and the Linux kernel, but they will integrate most of the other software programs that will be useful to the user.
So a Linux distribution will be known as a Modular operating system, where all the parts of the operating system is developed by different programmers and customized, optimized and combined by other developers.
Popular Modern Linux Distributions
There are so many other Linux distributions that are not mentioned on the above list, you can find more information from www.distrowatch.com
If you want to become a successful Linux professional, you must be able to choose a proper Linux distribution for the proper task. When moving to Linux many people make the same mistake of selecting the wrong Linux distribution that does not serve the purpose. When it comes to Sri Lanka, people fall in trouble when choosing a proper Linux distribution due to the lack of knowledge of the subject. This is where Turnkey IT Training plays the main role.
At Turnkey, from the day one we will assist you with the knowledge to find the proper Linux distributions for your tasks. As a matter of fact, Our Linux training will be based on CentOS (Community Enterprise Operating System). Since our Linux training is focused on network administration and security we have chosen a Linux distribution optimized for networking environments. Once you learn one Linux distribution you can easily migrate to other Linux distributions, but what you should remember is no two Linux distributions are the same, we can tell all Linux distributions are 80% similar but 20% different, so getting the proper foundation is very important.
A person might ask what is CentOS? So we at Turnkey feel that it is our responsibility to explain about CentOS because we are the only institute to conduct a Diploma based on CentOS in Sri Lanka. CentOS is a Linux distribution based on the popular RHEL(Red Hat Enterprise Linux), since RHEL support and updates are commercial, back in 2004 a developer called Lance Davis and his team started the CentOS project.
Basically the CentOS development team takes the source code of the RHEL and removes all the copyrighted materials and rebuilds the entire OS and gives the customer support (web based only) and updates for free.
At first most of the people thought CentOS will hurt RHEL and the Red Hat business, but on the long run, CentOS has given a large publicity to Red Hat because there's no such thing as bad publicity. A natural migration path for free CentOS users would be to require more support and since their universe is Red Hat-centric, the "pay for" version they'd likely choose would be Red Hat.
Nowadays CentOS is more popular in small and medium sized network environments, where RHEL is popular in large enterprise network environments. Nevertheless CentOS currently powers seven super computers in the world and is the OS used in the world's 10th fastest "Red Sky" super computer according to www.top500.org and according to W3Techs(w3techs.com) web technology surveys CentOS is the most popular web server platform.
