Frednik Svedsen was positioned comfortably at the top of the Optimist category of the Janashakthi Sailing Nationals, towards the end of the opening day’s proceedings which wound down at the Bolgoda Lake yesterday.Svedsen coasted past the field’s other junior sailors to ease to victories in his first two races.

However in his third and final race of the day, he was restricted to a second place finish behind Kimberly Karpinski, who had come third and fourth in her previous two races to finish third overall for the day.

Meanwhile the second slot in the Optimists group went to Tharindu, who produced consistently strong performances in his first two races but fell out of sync in his final race, when he was out maneuvered and pushed down to a fifth place finish.

During competition in the senior categories, Frank Biesterveld and Jeremy Bolling stood in the lead after two races in the GP14 group. The two men finished ahead of Anil and Michelle Gunawardena, who sailed past the finish line in second and third position during their two races.

In the Enterprise group, which had also completed two races, Gnanawardena and Soysa led Janaka and Nisantha. In the Laser Standard and Laser 4.7, Kodituwakku and Radheeka Jayasinha stood as race leaders respectively.

The final day of the Janashakthi Sailing Nationals will be held today. Competitors will have their first day’s results combined with their performances today before being awarded places in their respective groups.
