The organizers were forced to restrict the first round matches to one over due to the time factor in completing the tournament on schedule. This was done in fairness to all the 36 teams which agreed to the change.
The highlight of the day’s proceedings was the massive score of 121 for no loss chalked up by Dharmapala Pannipitiya against Asoka MV which incidentally is the highest score in the history of the 18 year old tournament.
Dharmapala’s mammoth score came on the back of an unbeaten knock of 57 by Hasitha Nirmal which included five boundaries and three sixes which was also is the top score of the tournament so far.
The team to impress from the outstation school was no doubt the Habarana Isuru School who got the better of Royal Institute in the first round but was unfortunate to lose to host Wesley.
The Batticaloa Combined team too impressed as they started with by defeating Thurstan before going down to Prince of Wales who won with one ball to spare.
Meanwhile the completion of the matches saw four teams Prince of Wales, Dharmapala, DSS and host Wesley advance to the quarter finals. The remaining four teams will be decided today morning after the completion of the third round matches.
The final days proceedings today will begin at 8.00 a.m. with the third round match between St Joseph’s and Richmond. The other three matches are Joseph Vaz vs Nalanda, Carey vs Royal Panadura and St Benedict’s vs St Peter’s.
The quarter finals are scheduled to be played from 10.30 a.m. onwards and the semi-finals are due to be played from 1.15 p.m. which will culminate with the final due to be played at 4.15 p.m.
