Flood risk is high as water levels rise in five Western and Southern Province rivers – the Kalu Ganga, the Kelani Ganga, the Nilwala Ganga and the Attanagalu Oya. If the heavy rains continue, serious flooding can be expected, warns the Disaster Management Centre. The Kelani Ganga is already overflowing and affecting residents in the Malwana and Biyagama areas.
The inter-monsoon rains are expected to continue into the following week, with afternoon and night showers and thundershowers expected in most parts of the island, according to the Meteorology Department.
The department advises the public to take precautions against lightning and strong winds. |
