An act worthy of emulation

By Mohamad Buharruddeen

A rare act of selfless generosity was witnessed when the ex- principal of Galewela MMV D.N. Balasuriya donated his entire farewell gift to a temple.

Balasuriya retired after a career spanning 30 years, where he rose from teacher to principal. On his retirement, his successor, the incumbent principal of Galewela MMV, C.B. Herath, its staff and students presented him with home appliances worth one-and-a-half lakhs, at a farewell ceremony funded and organised by them.

On the day after his farewell function, accompanied by his successor Herath, Balasuriya made a bee line to the temple at Galewela and, in a meritorious act unprecedented in the annals of the school, offered his farewell presents in their entirety to the Viharadipathi.

They were received by the Dayaka Sabha of the temple. Addressing those gathered at the temple, the ex-principal said, “What we take back when we leave this planet is not all these, but the merits we accrue”.

The Viharadipathi in his address said that such men were an example to society.
