Protesting U’grads block traffic for an hour

By L.B. Senaratne

Traffic was halted for nearly an hour on Friday afternoon, when undergraduates protesting against the remand of their colleagues, burnt tires on the main road near the Galaha Junction entrance to the University of Peradeniya, while some other undergraduates were on a satyagraha campaign.

The students were remanded for alleged unruly conduct on July 12 during a function attended by the Minister of Higher Education S.B. Dissanayake. An anticipatory Bail application was refused by the Kandy Magistrate, while a Revision application is pending in the High Court.

Attorney-at-Law Sudath Karavita, appearing for the undergraduate Student leaders, during submissions at the Revision application, told Court that, if the undergraduates were kept away in remand for more than 80% of their attendance, they would not be able to sit for their examinations.

The High Court issued Notices on the OIC Peradeniya Police and the Attorney General.
