From indigenous to modern, a four-day fashion fiesta

By Dhananjani Silva

Sri Lanka’s fashionistas will have a rare opportunity to witness a range of unique fashion trends from indigenous to modern styles at the mega fashion show to be held at Independence Square from November 17 to 20. The event is a part of the cultural and historical programme – ‘Nidahasa’ organised to celebrate President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s swearing in for his second term of office.

Showcasing their talents at the exclusive zone allocated for fashion and design at Torrington Square during the cultural programme will be the recent graduates of the University of Moratuwa- Department of Textile and Clothing Technology. In 2001, the department started a four-year full time Bachelor of Design Degree in Fashion Design and Product Development giving an opportunity for those who wanted to pursue a professional career in fashion and the results are now more than evident.

The four - day long fashion fiesta that takes place at 7 p.m. each day will be a display of ancient period dresses to modern styles, said Minister of Media and Information Keheliya Rambukwella at a news briefing to announce the ‘Nidahasa’ national-cultural programme. The exhibition is based on the concept of cherished historical and national values.

But although the show is organised on these lines, the importance of moving with the modern technology is not set aside. “So there will be a scientific display of activities that relates to textile industry, technology and ancient dress designs that stem from different periods,” the Minister said. Professional models will present designs and outfits from each period.

The event which is open to public free of charge will bring into the limelight various aspects such as history, cultural and national heritage, indigenous food, science and technology and entertainment.
