The Wellington Institute of Technology or WelTec, is a public New Zealand polytechnic based in Petone. WelTec was formed by an amalgamation between the Central Institute of Technology and the Hutt Valley Polytechnic in 2001. Hutt Valley Polytechnic was established in 1904. Almost 11,000 students studied at WelTec in 2009.
Students can choose from nationally and internationally recognized qualifications. All qualifications are registered with the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) and many programmes incorporate City and Guilds International qualifications.
Students can gain the practical skills required for success in today's competitive job market. They connect with industry through the practical experience built into our programme such as: case studies, industry partnerships and work experience. Further WelTec has 16 industry advisory committees, many of which include the major employers in the greater Wellington region. 90% of employers say WelTec's graduates are work ready and 90% say WelTec's qualifications prepare students for the future needs in their industry. Students can enter the workforce with relevant skills and knowledge.
The programme managers at WelTec work directly with employers and industry advisory groups to make sure that their qualifications include the skills and knowledge that employers want. 94% of employers say that WelTec's qualifications are relevant.
WelTec prides itself on being up to date with the latest technology and has invested millions of dollars in teaching facilities and equipment. We have a fully functional hairdressing and beauty salon, gymnasium and restaurant, specialist computer software and specialist machinery and equipment.
Students learn from tutors who have a wealth of industry experience and specialist knowledge in their subject areas. Our programme managers are well recognized in their disciplines and have won a number of awards for their expertise. Students receive close support and individual attention from tutors as well as a range of other support facilities from academic and learning support to financial, cultural and personal support.
WelTec has two campuses in Wellington. The Petone Campus is in Buick Street, Petone - 10 minutes from central Wellington, and the Wellington CBD campus is at 11-17 Church St in Wellington. WelTec also has campuses in Auckland and Christchurch.
