Tianjin Vice Mayor visits Sri Lanka with Tianjin Medical University delegation

Chinese Ambassador Tianjin Medical University President and other delegation members met Mrs Shiranthi Rajapaksa to discuss about a Pre-School Teacher's programme recently. New trends in Chinese higher education are attracting the attention of global educators.. Since the establishment of Western-oriented modern universities at the end of nineteenth century, Chinese higher education has continued to evolve. Over the past three decades, however, tremendous economic development in China has stimulated reforms in higher education that have resulted in some remarkable changes.

Chinese higher education has been the focus of Sri Lanka and other countries in the South Asian region with the new education trends in universities along with its most modern facilities as well as high skilled and well experienced academic staff. Therefore students of four corners in the world including Sri Lanka and Asia are eager to further their higher education in China .

China has been offering education to foreign students for more than fifty years and today it ranks one among the top countries of the world that are most-sought-after by international students for quality education. With the availability of large number of top universities, colleges, institutes in China, China accommodates abundant number of students from more than hundred different countries across the world these days. Universities in China make regular efforts to enhance distinctive teaching and training methods to complement the different academic settings of the foreign students.

Most of the Sri Lankan students are eager to under go highest studies in Western Medicine and Engineering technology.

Tianjin University is very popular in Sri Lanka and around 500 students apply to enter the Medical faculty annually. Only around 75 to 80 students are selected according to their highest qualifications. The qualifications required for the admission to Tianjin Medical University is Credit pass in English in the G.C.E ordinary Level Examination and two credits (2C's ) and a simple pass (S') in the G.C.E. Advanced Level Examination. Educational qualifications and the high discipline are essential requisites to gain admission to this university.

The academic staff is very particular about the attendance of students for lectures as well as their discipline and a progress report of students will be sent by registered post to their parents living all over the world.

Overseas Medical students of 50 countries are currently studying the five year Medical degree course in English medium at the university. Tianjin Medical University founded in 1951 was the first medical institution approved by the State Council of the People's Republic of China.

TMU was one of the first universities in China to be recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) and one of the very few universities in China to acquire the approval of the Ministry of Education to accept foreign students. Sri Lanka's medical council has recognized this university in 1972. Its fully fledged fifteen storied foreign students dormitory provides hostel facilities for students and it is an attractive place.

The first stimulation hospital in China was opened in last September at the university premises and it is great asset for medical students. They will be given an opportunity to undergo clinical training from the second semester of the 3rd year to 5th year at this hospital affiliated to seven hospitals. Former chairman of Sri Lanka Medical council Dr. H.H.R. Samarasinghe , and registrar of the council visited the university and inspected its facilities. Sri Lankan students have been provided with an opportunity to gain knowledge in Forensic medicine , and community medicine from them. Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa also visited the hospital, and he praised the excellent facilities provided for Sri Lankan students.

The university has also increased its number of scholarships granted for students. 30 students received scholarships last year. Sri Lankan students received 24 out of 30 scholarships of Rs.15, 000 per month, and they need only Rs. 6,000 orRs.7,000 per month for their food. Ten scholarships will be given for most talented MBBS students to under go studies for their MD . Sino- Lanka Educations and Tianjin Medical University jointly organize lectures of guest lecturers and Sri Lankan and foreign students appreciate it greatly.

Sri Lankan state officials frequently visit this university . First lady madam Shiranthi Rajapaksa and her delegation inquired into the welfare of students. Ministers Maithripla Sirisena , Pavithra Wanniarchchi , Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa , several senior officials and opposition MPs visited the university and it was a great inspiration for students. Sri Lankan Ambassador in China Karunathilake Amunugama is also looking into the welfare of Sri Lankan students frequently. An agreement was signed between the Maharagama Cancer hospital and Tianjin Medical University to initiate a training course. A close relation is being maintained by the institution with the mayor and vice mayor of Tianjin. Former chairman of Sri Lanka Medical council Dr. H.H.R. Samarasinghe recently met vice mayor of Tianjin Miss Zhang Junfan and held talks on the needs of students.

Prominence will also be given for sports and extra curricular activities especially for cricket swimming basket ball and badminton. Sri Lankan students and overseas students get an opportunity to improve their music talents by involving themselves in two university music bands. The annual new year festival titled"Suva hastha "jointly organized by Sino Lanka Educations and Tianjin Medical University is a major attraction during the month of April, every year.

Sino Lanka Educations institute is extremely vigilant on Sri Lankan students providing protection and shelter and guidance for them.
