Tianjin Medical University founded in 1951 was the first medical institution approved by the State Council of the People's Republic of China.
TMU was one of the first universities in China to be recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) and one of the very few universities in China to acquire the approval of the Ministry of Education to accept foreign students. Sri Lanka's medical council has recognized this university in 1972. Its fully fledged fifteen storied foreign students dormitory provides hostel facilities for students and it is an attractive place.
The first stimulation hospital in China was opened in last September at the university premises and it is great asset for medical students. They will be given an opportunity to undergo clinical training from the second semester of the 3rd year to 5th year at this hospital affiliated to seven hospitals. Former chairman of Sri Lanka Medical council Dr. H.H.R. Samarasinghe , and registrar of the council visited the university and inspected its facilities. Sri Lankan students have been provided with an opportunity to gain knowledge in Forensic medicine , and community medicine from them. Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa also visited the hospital, and he praised the excellent facilities provided for Sri Lankan students.
The university has also increased its number of scholarships granted for students. 30 students received scholarships last year. Sri Lankan students received 24 out of 30 scholarships of Rs.15, 000 per month, and they need only Rs. 6,000 orRs.7,000 per month for their food. Ten scholarships will be given for most talented MBBS students to under go studies for their MD . Sino- Lanka Educations and Tianjin Medical University jointly organize lectures of guest lecturers and Sri Lankan and foreign students appreciate it greatly.
Sri Lankan state officials frequently visit this university . First lady madam Shiranthi Rajapaksa and her delegation inquired into the welfare of students. Ministers Maithripla Sirisena , Pavithra Wanniarchchi , Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa , several senior officials and opposition MPs visited the university and it was a great inspiration for students. Sri Lankan Ambassador in China Karunathilake Amunugama is also looking into the welfare of Sri Lankan students frequently. An agreement was signed between the Maharagama Cancer hospital and Tianjin Medical University to initiate a training course. A close relation is being maintained by the institution with the mayor and vice mayor of Tianjin. Former chairman of Sri Lanka Medical council Dr. H.H.R. Samarasinghe recently met vice mayor of Tianjin Miss Zhang Junfan and held talks on the needs of students.
Prominence will also be given for sports and extra curricular activities especially for cricket swimming basket ball and badminton. Sri Lankan students and overseas students get an opportunity to improve their music talents by involving themselves in two university music bands. The annual new year festival titled"Suva hastha "jointly organized by Sino Lanka Educations and Tianjin Medical University is a major attraction during the month of April, every year.
