Badra’s 42-year school record broken by HFC athlete

Sri Lanka’s former champion sprinter K.G. Badra Gunawardene’s 42 year-old record at Holy Family Convent, Bambalapitiya, (HFC) was broken on Friday by another athlete.

Participating in the 100 metres under 19 event during the school’s sports meet, Nithya Arawwala won with a timing of 12.7 seconds clipping one second off Badra’s 1969 record of 12.8 seconds at a similar HFC meet.

Badra, who later married champion sprinter Sunil Gunawardene both of whom are now actively involved in coaching and sports administration, also has an unbroken 200 metres record at HFC where she schooled.

Young Nithya swept the awards at Friday’s meet, winning the 200 metres, 100 metres hurdles and securing second in long jump. She was picked as the most outstanding senior athlete and senior champion.
