When Marsi Perera sold his two year old band, ‘The X-periments’, to a young lawyer / musician in 1974, little would he have realized that years down the line Sohan Weerasinghe would make the band a household name.
Listen to Sohan talk about why he abandoned a would-have-been lucrative legal career and choose to be a musician … those good old days of ‘primitive’ sound and ‘wind-conditioned’ vehicles … of the ‘Akasa Kade’, ‘Blue Leopard’ and the ‘Coconut Grove’ … of sundown dances and ‘real’ music …
Multi-channel mixers were non-existent at that time, nor was downloading lyrics and tracks from the internet. It was not even a dream, leave alone a distant one. It was beyond comprehension !
Sohan has sung with almost all the leading ladies of Sri Lanka’s music industry but diplomatically avoids naming favourites. Now using his 14th passport, he has performed all over the world and still rides the crest of the wave.
He’s taken both bouquets and brickbats in his stride and has stood the test of time. Retirement ??? Oh no … it hasn’t even remotely crossed his mind.
Catch Sohan on “Celeb Chat” at 9.30 pm on Monday, 7 March in an unplugged chat with host Kumar de Silva.
Repeat telecast will be on Tuesday, 8 March at 3.00 am, 11.00 am and 8.00 pm.
