Schools Rugby League with ten teams in “A” Division

By Shamseer Jaleel

Schools’ Rugby League will kick off in the last week of March with 10 teams participating in the top division. Though earlier there were talks that there will be 12 teams and two groups to be formed, the idea was not taken forward by the newly appointed committee.

Newly elected President of the Schools Society (SLSRFA) Ruwan Chandrasekera also the Principal of Kingswood College speaking to the Sunday Times said: “As per the constitution we will have only 10 teams in the top division. This means Dharmarajah and Science College will be featured in the “B” division”.

Chandrasekera, who is in this capacity for the second time said that, “We will have two games in April, five in May and the last one in June. Soon after the League there will be a presentation for the schoolboys of the current year. Further the Junior Asiad will take place in Hong Kong (June 15-25) and the selectors could form a pool while the school season is on. Royal and Trinity have requested for a date for their ‘Bradby Shield’ encounter which will be given due recognition”.

Speaking further he stressed the importance of playing rugby and improving brotherhood and friendship among schoolboys and refrain schools from going to courts to sort out issues. After the League there will be a 45 day break for the boys to sit for the Advanced Level Exams, in August the Knock out Tournament will take place and the season will come to an end by then. According to reliable sources both Science College and Dharmaraja College are seeking legal opinion in this regard and are likely to take the matter to courts.
