They are the voiceless amidst the screams for women's rights. The silent victims amidst the movements on gender equity and empowerment of women. They are women, the ordinary women who sweat and shed tears to earn a daily living.
Scorching sun, dust and wind are the minor barriers they face in their daily struggle. Legs weakening and sight dimming with old age, they continue to "work," to make ends meet.
Yet, the living brand them 'road sweepers', 'beggars' or 'garment girls'.
The Minister of Child Development and Women's Affairs Tissa Karaliyedda said his Ministry launched a plan to strengthen the economy of women, but it was not enough to create a lasting impact, therefore, new programmes are launched on empowering women... "As a result, yesterday we launched another programme to strengthen the domestic economy of 1,000,000 families", he added.
