The Ceylon National Chamber of Industries (CNCI) this week welcomed the commissioning of the Norochcholai Coal Power Plant saying the chamber had joined with the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) from the initial stages in promoting a coal power plant.
The CNCI said there was considerable delay in the decision-making to implement the Norochcholai Coal Power Plant, Kothmale Hydro Power and Kerawalapitiya Combined Circle Plant. As a result a few years back the country had to experience several hours of power cuts on a daily basis and this was later overcome by commencing several thermal power generators but all the industries and the consumers had to pay high costs for this power.
“CEB authorities did plan and seek the approval of the Government at that time to implement three projects mentioned above. The decision was not forthcoming. It was at that time that CNCI along with CEB came to the forefront to canvass these projects. CNCI jointly with CEB and on its own, conducted a series of public awareness seminars, published several articles in the media, held media conferences and made representations to the decision makers. Sadly however too long was taken over this decision and we are therefore (now) indeed happy that two of the projects have now being commissioned and the third will follow soon,” the CNCI said in the statement.
