Some of the biggest violations take place in Colombo city where many buses pull over when and where they please to pick up passengers with little care for road rules.

In addition, most bus operators are speed fiends as they try to out do each other to reach their respective destinations posing a danger to pedestrians and other motorists. Private Bus Operators Association president Gemunu Wijeratne said the current mess was due to the absence of a proper time table.

"This has led to indiscipline among the operators which in turn poses a danger to road users," he admitted.

In addition to these hazards, people have to stand in the hot sun or get soaked in the rain because of bus halts with no shelters. These pictures show commuters standing in the sweltering heat waiting for a bus at halts sans shelters, and buses stopping at places where there are no bus halts indicated.
