Five arrests over airport theft of Rs. 60 m in gold biscuits

A senior airline clerk and his wife and brother-in-law have been arrested in connection with the theft of gold biscuits worth Rs. 60 million from a safety locker at the Bandaranaike International Airport, in Katunayake.

The arrests were made in Minuwangoda on March 29 by a special CID team. Of the 117 missing gold biscuits, a stash of 107 biscuits was found buried in the garden of the Minuwangoda premises of the chief suspect.

According to the Police, a total of 117 gold biscuits, weighing 15.2 kilograms, were stolen from the airport safety locker on March 22. Apparently, the main suspect was in heavy debt. Eight of the gold biscuits were passed on to a Negombo broker, who then sold these to a jeweller for Rs. 5.5 million.

A part of this money was given to the chief suspect. The chief suspect’s wife and brother-in-law were found to have sold some of the gold biscuits and retained the proceeds. They are being held for further questioning. A total of five persons are in police custody in connection with the gold biscuits theft.
