Celebration of metal

By Thushara Kulatunga

They’re calling it not just an ode to metal, but a true celebration. ‘Psycho Martyrdom,’ an event which is set to take place on May 6 at the British School Auditorium promises to be a night of epic proportions for the Heavy Metal community of Sri Lanka. Set to take stage alongside Sri Lankas own Metal titans Stigmata (www.stigmataband.net), will be Dubai based Death Metal giants Nervecell, and UK based Thrash/Progressive metal act Cyanide Serenity.

Nervecell (www.nervecell.net) is one of Asia’s oldest and most respected Death Metal bands that have been garnering more and more fans from around the world since their inception in 1999 with their intense brand of Death Metal.

The band has just kick-started their tour in support of their second full length album titled ‘Psychogenocide’, which was released a few days via Lifeforce Records (Europe) and Spellbind records (Middle East). Sri Lanka will be one of the bands stops before they head off to India and then to Germany. This will be nervecell’s second time playing in Sri Lanka and according to the organizers they are psyched to be gracing the Sri Lankan Metal heads yet again.

Cyanide Serenity (www.myspace.com/cyanideserenity) is a Progressive/Thrash Metal act hailing from midlands (UK). The band is fairly new, having formed in 2008 the band is already making an impact in the international Heavy Metal circuit, even opening for Iron Maiden in Bangalore, India. The band will be hitting Sri Lankan shores in support of their debut EP titled ‘Consume Me’, before continuing on the rest of their tour. In April 2011, the band announced that Travis Neal of American Metal band Divine Heresy will be taking on vocal duties of the band. This will be the first time that a band from the UK will be playing in Sri Lanka.

“It has been quite a struggle for the band and a few others, a team of about ten people who have been working tirelessly to ensure that the event goes flawlessly,” said Suresh de Silva, the Stigs frontman, adding that tasks like dealing with officials for performance licenses have been extremely tiring.
“Both bands have been really cool and corporative.

They were both playing in India for the Deccan Rock Festival and both bands expressed a lot of eagerness to perform here so we thought we should make it happen,” Suresh explained. “It’s really good to see lots of big international bands expressing their interest to play here and actually coming down. We hope that this will be a stepping stone for more international metal bands to play over here and we are working on making that happen,” he said, adding that if this event goes well, they will be a lot closer to making that a reality.

This event is set to take place on May 6, 2011. From 7 p.m onwards at the British School Auditorium. Tickets are priced at Rs.1000 and can be reserved by calling 777 287 776 or 779 474 472.
A limited amount of special gig t-shirts are also available. Reserve yours by contacting the given numbers
