Sri Lanka Ports Authority clinched the Munchee National Volleyball title after a lapse of 21 years when they defeated first timers Navy by three sets to one in the final at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium yesterday.
The champions last won the national title way back in 1989 and since then have made it to the final on several occasions but had to play second fiddle.
They took an early lead winning the first two sets of the five sets encounter with scores of 25-19 and 25-23.
The Navy who are playing in a major volleyball final for the first time though lacking the experience made a come back when they took the third set 25-17, but that was all they could do.
Meanwhile in the women’s final of the Munchee Volleyball Nationals which was prior to this game saw ladies from the Foreign Employment Bureau (FBE) overcome the strong Air Force ladies by three sets to one.
Earlier in the day the Division Two finals of the men’s and women’s which was worked out saw Casualine SC Mawathagama beat Vijaya SC Kowadiya in the women’s category and National Youth Council beat Army in the men’s category with both ending in two sets to one victory for the winners.
