The Anthonians looked decidedly superior to the Rajans as they won by 29 points (3 goals, 1 try, 1 penalty) to 3 (a penalty) at Bogambara yesterday. The winners led 8-3 at half time.
The Anthonians gave a foretaste of what was to come when they almost scored off the kick off. The first try originated from a free kick thirty yards out, when a short tap was taken and finally lock Laheer crashed his way through. Full back P.C. Kumara put over a penalty to make it 8-0 but Rajan Wijesinghe cut the deficit with a well taken penalty.
The match was, for most part, a forgettable one, with mistakes in handling and plenty of listless play. Two tries within the space of seven minutes by fly half D.C.L. Tharanga were exciting efforts. The speedy Anthonians latched on to two loose balls and sent Tharanga on his way.
Lock forward M. Aly also touched down for the Anthonians and full back P.C. Kumara converted three tries.
With victory assured, the Anthonians spun out a few dazzling moves but the Rajan defence held.Three Rajans were yellow carded and one was red carded while two Anthonians were shown the yellow card.
The match could have ended in fisticuffs had it gone on longer.
