Soul Sounds; adding a little Soul to Pop

Tickets for the concert will be available at the Lionel Wendt box office from May 15. For more information visit their website www.soulsounds.org.

The Lionel Wendt will come alive with the sounds of pop music on May 31 and June 1 as the acclaimed female choral group Soul Sounds, led by Soundarie David Rodrigo, returns to the Colombo stage. The concert titled Sounds like Pop will see Soul Sounds take on a versatile mix of popular music ranging from the then to the now.

The choir, specializing in Gospel and spiritual music, recently focused on expanding their repertoire by moving towards a pop genre, resulting in a tribute concert to Michael Jackson in August 2009. Once again they will be exploring this genre of music in Sounds like Pop with their own take on songs made popular by artists such as Elvis Presley, Madonna, Heart, Roxette, Destiny's Child, Green Day, Katy Perry and Gloria Estefan, to name a few.

Music Director Soundarie David Rodrigo notes that "this time we aim to push boundaries by venturing into another genre of music and giving it our own flavour. It is amazing how the pop music that we constantly hear on the radio lends itself so easily to completely new and interesting interpretations. Music truly is an art form that everyone can relate to and that is exactly what we are attempting to show through this concert. No song is too modern or too old to be enjoyed by anyone."

The group has been working on selecting repertoire and has finalized a programme that they believe will be relevant to all ages.
