Sri Lanka has been ranked 137 among 155 countries, down 45 places from its earlier rank of 92, in the World Bank’s 2010 Logistics Performance Index (LPI).
Sri Lanka is placed below Mozambique, Solomon islands and Myanmar and even Bangladesh, according to the index released earlier this month.
The index gauges each country’s logistics effectiveness based on a survey of a large number of global freight forwarders and express carriers in the international freight sector. “Sri Lanka should improve custom procedures warehouse facilities cargo transportation to attract more Foreign Direct Investment. LPI is equally important as the ease of doing business index to depict the country’s investment climate,” Dr. Indrajit Coomaraswamy , a former Director, Economic Affairs Division at the Commonwealth Secretariat who earlier served in the Central Bank and Finance Ministry, told the Business Times.
