Imagine a sound like the taste of sour fruit soaking in sweet cachaça, cooled in ice and touched with a dash of lime – mouth-watering?
The De Lanerolle Brothers proudly present ‘Caipifruta!’ – the young jazz-pop-Broadway quartet from Malaysia – at the Lionel Wendt Theatre on Monday, June 20, 2011 at 7.30pm. The tickets are now available at the Lionel Wendt Theatre, Commons and Park Street Mews.
Tracy Wong (soprano), Lai Suk Yin (alto), Aaron Teoh (tenor), Joel Wong (baritone) – the fruit, cachaça, ice and lime (in which order though!?) of Caipifruta! – together with their accompanist jazz pianist Wei Zhong promise “a tongue-in cheek, colourful evening of musical exploration” for their audience. “Like the cocktail drink which inspired the name”, they say, “Caipifruta! aims to tantalise and relax your senses with a splash of Jazz, a dash of Pop and a slice of Broadway, all shaken together with a twist of humour and a few surprises”.
The important thing about the concert, for the host De Lanerolle brothers is, as Rohan puts it, that it “opens our minds about musical standards and interpretation”. He reflects on how Sri Lanka continues to allow the western hemisphere to monopolize the music scene, protesting that there is a “hell of a lot” of talent in Asia. “It’s important that we hear choirs based in countries closer to ours” he says, adding that it helps strengthen musical ties as well as cultural exchange.
“They made a guest appearance at one of my solo concerts in Malaysia last September,” continues Rohan, adding that “they’re very versatile and sing jazz very well.” The group is relatively young, he says, though they will perform numbers any audience will know, recognise and appreciate.
The print media sponsors for the event are the Sunday Times, Daily Mirror and HI Magazine.
The concert promises an exciting auditory experience, possibly complemented by a guest appearance by the De Lanerolle Brothers themselves! So for those of you, young and old, looking for fresh flavour, exciting sounds or maybe just a good time and good music, make plans for a night out with lots of Caipifruta! (pun intended). |
