Sri Lanka Tourism has launched an exciting tourism development project based in Kalpitiya in a bid to place Sri Lanka as one the most sought after destinations in South Asia.
In lines with the vision of the Sri Lanka Tourism, many small hotel projects have sprung up in the area. But one of the best projects to develop is Ruwala Resort in Eththale, Thihaliya ten minutes drive away from the Thalawila Chruch.
Nestled in the remote fishing village of Thihaliya, by the banks of Puttalam Lagoon, Ruwala Nature and Adventure Resort spans nine acres of coconut garden and is geared to provide a relaxing as well as an adventurous holiday experience for all holiday makers, who wants to get away from the fast city life.
At Ruwala, guests can wake up to the orchestra of bird calls, the rushing wind, the sound of water lapping at the shore and the gentle rustling of Palmyra palms - all in tranquil surroundings. The journey from Colombo will take up to 3 ½ hrs to come to the haven by the water.
The key attraction of the resort is the clump of around 100 yr old palms, which are in a circular formation. This has been treated as a centre court, the rest of the buildings have been constructed to radiate from the centre court which has an open air hang out area with hammocks and easy chairs with facilities for a Bon-fire.
The resort is divided by a sandbank into two sections, with the chalets, cottages, and main dining area at one end, and with the camp-site and outdoor/adventure activities situated at the other.
The Ruwala Resort offers comfortable accommodation with two spacious Chalets with four rooms, Cozy Cabanas and Camping by the lagoon for the more adventurous people
‘Adventure activities and camping section have been separated from the luxury chalets mainly because of the guests come to the main Resort to enjoy the tranquility and privacy’ said Maithri Liyanage, joint MD of the property.
Ruwala Resort is a dream project of husband and wife duo Anudini and Maithri Liyanage. ‘This was our dream and we always wanted to start something like an eco friendly adventure project. We put all our heart and soul to Ruwala and wanted to make this the best eco friendly resort in the area’ Anudini said.
The rooms and suites at the resort have a contemporary, yet ‘local’ feel, with a blend of earth-coloured walls and wide windows framing the magnificent views of the lagoon and garden.
Open-sided restaurant that can seat forty guests comfortably has a rooftop terrace with fitted cement seats for basking in the sun or chilling-out later in the day, where the view of the moonlit lagoon from the rooftop is spectacular.
The Resort is just one and half years old, yet has become a top attraction of the area.
Naturally close to one of the most bountiful lagoon, cuisine of the Ruwala Resort is rich with sea food. It offers all local, as well as international food and the kitchen caters to a wide array of palates.
‘BBQs are also served at the restaurant and are prepared with fresh sea-food purchased directly from the local fisherman and keeping with the eco friendly policy, we buy all fresh vegetables from the farmers of the area’ said .the Chef Prabath Buddhika.
‘We serve all fresh juices from the garden fresh fruits’ he added
