The Amateur Sepaktakraw Association of Sri Lanka has been invited for the 2011 ISTAF World Cup Sepaktakraw competition to be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from July 21 to 24.
Twenty countries from Asia, Europe and the Middle East will be participating at this four day contest. It is a discipline at all Asian Games.
The invitation to send a team for the World Cup has encouraged local Sepaktakraw enthusiasts to take part in the event with renewed vigour. “This will be a wonderful opportunity to compete against top foreign teams. The organizers have repeatedly said that they are very keen to have a team from Sri Lanka at the World Cup,” said the President of the Amateur Sepaktakraw Association of Sri Lanka Nizam Hajireen.
The Sepaktakraw Nationals took place at the British School in Colombo last week where Nawalapitiya emerged champions with Garuda SC of Colombo taking second spot. A high standard prevailed where local players displayed fine positioning, dexterity and rare skill.
A pool will be formed this week and from that the players will be picked for the World Cup. The team is expected to leave on July 19 for the competition.
It is a game similar to volleyball but played with feet, head or any part of the body without the use of arms. Spiking with the foot and blocking with the foot or body is done airborne at the net which is 1.55m in height and erected at the center dividing the court into two halves. The winner of a game is decided either in the best of three sets or five sets. A set is of 15 points. |
