In a new development the Cuban government has come forward to extend its support by providing educational assistance to Sri Lankan coaches to obtain a degree in sports.
With the help of Cuba Sri Lanka will now have the ability to produce graduates with a sports degree. The initial request to conduct such a sports degree conducted by the Havana Sports University in Cuba was made by the Sri Lankan Minister of Sports, Mahindananda Aluthgamage.
The Minister’s request had been already conveyed to the Cuban government through H. E. Mrs. Nirsia Castro Guevera the Cuban Ambassador to Sri Lanka. In a quick reply the Cuban government expressed their interest to assist Sri Lanka in this endeavour.
At a special meeting held recently between the Guevera and Minister Aluthgamage it was agreed that the assistance of Cuban coaches will be utilized to develop sports in the country. In addition the programme will look into the possibilities of increasing the quota of Sri Lankans following the course at the Havana Sports University in Cuba.
“Initially the degree will be conducted here in Colombo at the Institute of Sports Science,” a sports ministry press release said. “Imparting knowledge to the coaches and sports officials has been a decade's long problem. The Ministry of Sports believes that by implementing this sports degree programme, Sri Lanka will be able to overcome many obstacles in sports,” the statement further said.
A team from Sri Lanka will go to Cuba shortly to conduct research studies on the sports degree programme. |
