Buddhist Songs from Sarath Goonawardene
An audio CD consists of ten Buddhist spiritual songs by veteran musician Sarath Goonawardene released especially for this ‘2600 Sri Sambuddhathwa Jayanthiya recently.
The CD in a sole creation of Sarath himself and all songs were penned by him. Melodies, music direction and the singing of the songs were done by him. This type of creation is a record breaker he says; only a very few artistes have done this type of creations. Sarath hit, a similar record in 2009 composing the ‘Theme song of Sri Lanka Railway’. This Audio CD for Buddhist song titled ‘Pujemi Buddhan’. Songs are highly gentle and meditative.
Most of the Songs are life experiences by the singer. The songs in the CD are budu guna, some are for religious places highlighted; like ‘Kelani Vihara’or ‘Awkana’ etc. Sarath offered the very first CD to Ven. Dharanagama Kusaladamma Thero; the Chairman of The Buddhist Rupavahini Channel and the Chief Rev. of Sri Sambodhi Vihara, Colombo. He also presented his new creation to Pandith; Dr. W.D. Amaradewa. This issue of CD followed by a programme of ‘Buddha Bathi Gee’ by the artistes of Moratuwa Arts Forum on stage at the Wesak Zone premises at Prince of Wales College organized by the Old Boys’ Buddhist Association during Wesak week last month.

Shakespeare Centre bring ‘Othello’
The 1000th performance of William Shakespeare’s Othello (Sinhala version) translated and directed by Obinamuni Gamini De Silva will be staged at 6.30 PM on June 24 at the Tower Hall Theatre, Maradana.
Presented by the Shakespeare Centre Sri Lanka, this performance is a landmark event in the history of the organization as it is a grand new production with a new visionary approach.
The philosophical themes and the operatic form of the original play have been adopted to a contemporary setting.
In this production, the Shakespeare Centre also expound the theory that Othello, the play is satiric of a tragedy and that it is not historical with a set place and time. This is an artistic fusion of realism with naturalism in theatre.
The music for this production is directed by Pradeep Jayathilaka with dance choreography by Selvin Jattar and Chamari Ranasingha. Through this production, the Shakespeare Centre Sri Lanka is to introduce a newly trained cast of young artistes to the Sri Lankan theatre.
