St. Joseph’s regained the Lady Jayathileke Shield when they inflicted a close 24-18 defeat over S. Thomas’ in an Under-20 schools league rugby match at Mt. Lavinia yesterday.

St. Joseph’s had the upper hand against the hapless Thomains who struggled through the entire season, played to their potential to win by four tries and two conversions.
S. Thomas’ who thrashed the Josephians 35-24 last year played an improved game though failing to put the finishing touches against a strong defense. They scored from two tries, a conversion and two penalties and trailed 7-12 at half time.
Tries for St. Joseph’s were scored by scrumhalf Piyum Jayasinghe, prop forward Yohan Keyzer, centre Kaveesha Mihiranga and No.8 Nuwan Wanniarachchi. Conversions were made by fullback Rehan Thyagarajah. For S. Thomas’ Louis Jayaweerasingham and Shehan Rodrigo scored tries apiece. Scrumhalf Devin Jayasinghe converted a try and a penalty. |
