Sri Lanka Lawyers’ Cricket is the cricketing arm of the lawyers in Sri Lanka that take part in the only other professional cricket world cup apart from the one that is hosted by the International Cricket Council (ICC). The 1st Lawyers’ Cricket World Cup was held in Hyderabad, India in 2007 where Sri Lanka fielded a team representing the Bar Association of Sri Lanka and led by Lasantha Mudalige, a past Holy Cross cricketer. Sri Lanka was placed 3rd in the overall standing where India became champions. Subsequently, Sri Lanka Lawyers’ Cricket was formed under the leadership of its 1st President, presently a Judge of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka, Hon. R. K. S. Suresh Chandra.
The 2nd Lawyers’ Cricket World Cup was held in Cambridge, England and the Sri Lankan team was led by former Nalanda cricketer, Binara Asabha Gunasekera. In that year the World Cup was won by Australia. The 3rd Lawyers’ Cricket World Cup is scheduled to be held in Barbados, West Indies from August 7 -21 this year and the Sri Lankan team will be led by former Thurstan cricketer Malika Gunasekera. For the first time in its history, this year’s world cup will be played in coloured attire and with white ball with the two semi finals and the final that is going to be played in the prestigious Kensington Oval, will be played under flood lights.
Sri Lanka Lawyers’ Cricket Team comprise of very competitive players who have represented at college and club levels of cricket and it has recorded many notable victories in several tournaments including the Division 3 tournament conducted by the Colombo District Cricket Association (CDCA). In 2010 season, they came up to the second round, while in the current domestic season they have presently reached the second round becoming the group leaders. Last year the Lawyers Team representing the Bar Association of Sri Lanka won the prestigious Law-Medical Cricket Match held at the P. Saravanamuttu Stadium in an exciting finish.
In raising sufficient funds to cover up expenses, Sri Lanka Lawyers Cricket has organized an evening of music by Annesley Malawana and the stars of 70s called “Golden Hits of 70s” to be staged on July 22 from 7 p.m. onwards at the Bishops College Auditorium. Tickets are priced at Rs. 500, Rs. 1,000, Rs. 1,500 and Rs. 2,000 and are available at Keels Super Market outlets in Colombo, Mt. Lavinia and Rajagiriya. The show will feature Annesley Malawana, Indrani Perera, Dharmaratne Brothers, Christopher Paul, Priyantha Fernando, Corrine Almeida, Rajive Sebastian and others. |
