Founded by Dr. Neville Fernando MBBS (Ceylon), South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine [SAITM] is a higher education Institution built with the intention to develop and enhance education in Sri Lanka. Its vision is 'to produce men and women of character and be the leading private sector higher education institute in the South Asian region'.

SAITM is Sri Lanka's first 'Green Campus' (www.saitm.edu.lk ) which was built and maintained to preserve the environment as much as possible in an eco-friendly manner. Situated in calm and serene surroundings of Malabe, SAITM offers a state of the art higher education opportunity for students who intend to follow their higher studies in Medicine, Engineering & IT, Management & Finance and ICT & Media. Commenced in 2008, SAITM has over 550 students currently studying and is affiliated with Nizhny Novgorod State Medical Academy - Russia, Asian Institute of Technology - Bangkok and Buckinghamshire New University - UK.

'One of the main intentions of SAITM is to produce employable graduates in accordance with the needs of Sri Lanka' said Dr. Neville Fernando MBBS (Ceylon), the President and Chairman of SAITM. This higher education institution boasts of best lecturers and facilities such as a modern auditorium, a comprehensive library, cafeteria, high speed internet connections, advanced laboratories, peaceful study areas and security. SAITM has Sri Lanka's largest iMAC laboratory at the disposal of the students. 'SAITM is in the process of expanding' Dr. Fernando informed Sunday Times. The new building, in close proximity and opposite the SAITM main campus building is primarily to house the rapidly expanding Faculties with provision made for additional laboratory and workshop space provided for research activities .More facilities such as hostels and recreational areas are also to be built in the spacious 7 acre land.

Medical students get a highly personalized education environment with one lecturer allocated to every batch of 10 students. Modern teaching equipment such as teleconferencing which the lecturers from Russia are using and electronic documentation are available. SAITM's academic and administrative staff is highly qualified personnel with vast work experience in the relevant industries and state universities. All academic staff are selected for their excellence in the respective fields.

Faculty of Medicine is affiliated with Nizhny Novgorod State Medical Academy - Russia. The aim is to produce patient friendly doctors with a broad medical education. Students are taught the same subjects as in Sri Lanka but with further knowledge of the History of Medicine, Philosophy, Fundamental Law, Psychology, IT, Languages including Russian and other subjects.

Faculty of Engineering and IT offers BSc Engineering degrees in affiliation with Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) Thailand. Students have the opportunity to work in advanced working conditions with high tech laboratories and other facilities. They are also provided with the best industrial training. Already some students have been assured of employment on completion of the degree.

Faculty of Management and Finance offers a cost effective degree programme in affiliation with the Buckinghamshire New University (BNU) of UK. Honours Degree students can specialize in Business Management, Management with Marketing, and International Business. The students have the option of completing the degree in Sri Lanka or in UK. Management students will also have an opportunity to experience the corporate world through internship training.

The Faculty of ICT and Media offers Sri Lanka's first BSc (Hons) Degree in Computing and Interactive Media. Affiliated with the Buckinghamshire New University, this degree opens up new horizons to the Sri Lankan students interested in pursuing a career in media. ICT and Media students also have the chance to work with some of the veteran film makers in the industry.

Entry requirements for the Medical degree is a minimum of 2 Credit Passes and 1 Simple Pass in the Biology Stream in the G.C.E. Advanced Level, Applicants with better performance in their A/L examination get priority in the selection process.

Entry requirements will vary according to the degree programme to be followed and more information can be obtained from the student counsellors on 0112413331. The course fee, which is considerably less than that of the same degree obtained overseas, can be paid in instalments. There are loan facilities arranged with Bank of Ceylon and National Development Bank. Scholarship schemes are also available.

Even though currently SAITM is offering the degrees of these affiliated universities, it has applied for recognition from the University Grants Commission (UGC) as a degree awarding institution to award its own degrees. This is carried-out with a vision of broadening its horizons and as a provider of quality higher education in Sri Lanka. To ensure the quality of the affiliated degree programmes, delegates from the affiliated universities visit to conduct lectures, monitor examinations and practicals on a regular basis. In addition the UGC regularly monitors the degree programmes.

Students of SAITM can participate and enjoy a variety of extra-curricular activities such as talent shows, cultural events, sports events etc. With the friendly environment focused on character building as well as education, SAITM is on its way to become the best higher education Institution in South Asia.
