The local mobile operation of UAE-based Etisalat announced that it had tied with Sri Lanka's OpenArc to launch OpenArc's "SkyPay" mobile banking offering to Etisalat's local customers. Quoted in Etisalat's local statement, OpenArc Chairman and Chief Executive, Daya Hettiarachchi, also revealed: “Mobile banking in Sri Lanka is still going through its learning curve. Many solutions that are widely published and offered are not truly secured mobile solutions but SMS messaging systems which are not only convenient to its customers but also not complying with Central Bank guidelines."
Meanwhile, "SkyPay" was indicated as including "deposits, withdrawals and payments through mobile phones, from anywhere, at any time. And these payments can be made from any person to another person, between companies, between banks and between accounts. All these can be done through any mobile phone (no need for an advanced mobile device) and through a common interface regardless of the financial institution or the mobile phone carrier.
Furthermore, these services are protected through the use of Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) technology instead of single channel SMS technology, making it much safer and easier to protect." |
