Kandurata Umbrella Ind. (Pvt) Ltd., a leader in the umbrella industry, with a majority market share has entered into the manufacturing and marketing of nylon and cotton socks in a big way. The company manufactures 1000 dozens of socks per day at its modern high tech factory located at kadugannawa.
The company plans to introduce several new and attractive products to suite the styles of the 21st century. A five member Chinese team of experts are engaged in the socks production process providing technical know how for Sri Lankan workers, a top official of the company said . the company alo produces branded socks, coloured socks and sports socks.
Chairman of the company Deshamanya Dr. M.T.M . Nawushad. revealed that the company has diversified its business venturing into the manufacture of rain coats, mosquito nets, and socks and it will introduce underwear to the local market soon under the penguin brand. He noted that his company has already entered the Jaffna market in a big way. Kandurata Umbrella Ind. (Pvt) Ltd., is catering to the requirements of local customers in the island including the North and East and there is huge demand for their quality products he said.
The Kandurata Umbrella Industries (Pvt.) Ltd, is highly renowned in manufacturing Penguin brand socks of superior quality using most modern machines capable of producing nylon and cotton socks in seven colours ,for the first time in Sri Lanka, he said."Starting from manufacturing umbrellas we stretched out our wings to manufacturing quality under wear for local market which is a long felt need of customers" he added. He asserted that high quality locally made under wears are very rare in the market and their company has stepped into fulfill this requirement The company has factories in Gampola, , and Kadugannawa where more than 2,000 are employed directly and indirectly. The company has a large number of hi Tec machines.

Ltd, won simultaneously the prestigious, ISO 9001:2008 industrial standard certification , as an endorsement of the quality of its products. This certificate endorses that the company has the required essentialities to produce at optimum level. It's an outstanding achievement in reaching the required competence and confidence," he said. He revealed that the company received the Soorya Sinha logo from the Mawbima Lanka Foundation recognizing Kandurata umbrellas as a local brand. The logo in the product inculcates the concept of patriotism in all promotional activities The KUI employs over 2000 people in two locations, namely the Head Office cum factory at Kadugannawa and Gampola.
Late Mr. M.H.M.Thajudeen founded the Kandurata Umbrella Industries which began as a small manufacturing business over three decades ago.
