Wesley College Colombo and Seetha Devi Girls’ School Kandy annexed the boys’ and girls’ hockey titles respectively at the Sri Lanka Schools Hockey Championship 2011 for boys and girls Under-17 concluded last Sunday (7) at the Royal College ground in Colombo.

The closely contested boys final between Wesley and last year champions Nalanda, Colombo saw Wesley scoring their winning goal through skipper and centre half Imadh Muzammil off a penalty corner in the first half to seal 1-0 victory. Indika Jayawardhene and M. Naushad controlled the final.
Wesley beat St. Thomas’ Matale 1-0 and Nalanda beat St. Aloysius’, Galle 2-1 in the semifinals. St. Thomas’ Matale had the consolation of winning the boys third place by defeating St. Aloysius’ by 3-1. For St. Thomas’, Udara Abeykoon (2) and Charith Dissanayake scored while Nadumal Jayasinghe claimed the solitary goal for St. Aloysius’.
Seetha Devi Girls’ School beat home town rivals Pushpadana Girls’ School Kandy 1-0 in the final to win the girls’ title. Forward Ayesha Madushani netted the winning goal in the first half. Ajith Manjula and G.H. Ekanayake controlled the final.

Seetha Devi beat Yasodhara, Colombo 3-1 on penalties after the game ended in a one-all draw. Samadara Chandrika claimed one for Seetha Devi while Upekha Prarthana netted one for Yasodhara Pushpadana Girls (Chathurika Ekanayake 2, Tinishia Jayasinghe 1) beat St. Anthony’s Girls School Kandy (Dinushi Gunawardhane 1) by 3 goals to one in the girls’ semifinal.
In the girls consolation final St. Anthony’s Girls’ beat Yasodhara Colombo 1-0 with right inside Amila Fonseka scoring the winning goal. The most striking feature of this year’s tournament was that the three leading hockey playing girls’ schools in Kandy entering the semifinal stage and winning the first three places. The three-day tournament conducted by SLSHA together with Colombo Schools Hockey Committee saw fifty teams from Colombo, Kandy, Matale, Galle, Wennappuwa, Gampaha and Badulla educational regions taking part.
Sumith Edirisinghe, Senior SSP, Matara and the president of SLHF graced the occasion as the chief guest. He distributed trophies and medals to winners along with the officials of Sri Lanka Schools Hockey Association.
