Accidents daily on Jaffna-Colombo route

Since the beginning of the year, as many as 32 road accidents, including five fatalities, have occurred on the Puttalam-Anuradhapura highway, between the 16th and 22nd mileposts.

In the past week, there was at least one accident a day along that stretch of road, according to the Saliyawewa Traffic Police.

Most of the accidents occurred at night, and involved lorries transporting goods from Jaffna to Colombo.
A police source said the road was carpeted recently and that a special road safety programme was introduced recently.
