Wettimuny brothers emerge winners

Centenary Shakespeare Shield golf tourney

Brothers Sidath and Nimal Wettimuny of Nobles (Pvt) Ltd. triumphed over Air Force Chief Air Marshal Harsha Abyewickrama and Maj. Gen. Srinath Rajapakse of the Ministry of Defence, to clinch the Shakespeare Shield in its 100th tournament last week. The prestigious tournament was played for over 17 weeks in a foursome format among top golfers of the corporate sector in Sri Lanka.

Winners Nobles (Pvt) Ltd represented by Sidath and Nimal Wettimuny, receiving the centenary Shakespeare Shield from Deputy Chairman Carson Cumberbatch Hari Selvanathan.

The former cricketing brothers sealed their victory on the 17th hole while producing one of the most sterling displays in the competition. A fitting celebration to conclude the 100th Golf Tournament of the Shakespeare Shield was held at the Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC) where competitors were honoured for their accomplishments. The gala awards ceremony was held in the presence of a large gathering of corporate representatives, past winners and centenary year participants. The past winners of the tournament were felicitated, recognizing their achievements at the Shakespeare Shield centenary year celebrations.

The Shakespeare Shield is the only tournament open to RCGC members who are employees or directors of registered companies, embassies, government departments and service organizations, and to date it is a popular tournament contested yearly by the corporate sector.

“Our organization is committed to be associated with the tournament with the Royal Colombo Golf Club and in honouring the contribution made by Mr. Shakespeare, we will continue to sponsor this event in the years to come,” Mano Selvanathan, Group Director of Carson Cumberbatch commented.

Carson Cumberbatch was initially incorporated as Sterling Company in 1871 and now is a fully Sri Lankan-owned establishment which has supported golf since it was first introduced to Sri Lanka in 1879. Carson’s has been the sponsor in this unbroken partnership with the RCGC since 1911.
