Performance testing of four-wheel vehicles first time in Sri Lanka

By Sunimalee Dias

Sri Lanka’s first four-wheel tester is now available with the capability of checking on a vehicle’s performance and the detection of any faults. The dyno tester that checks on the performance of all four-wheel vehicles is capable of conducting a complete diagnosis and analysis of vehicle detecting any faults, Bandula Weerasinghe, owner of the B.R.J.W. Weerasinghe vehicle sales organisation at Dutugemunu Street, Kohuwala, told the Business Times.

He noted that the dyno tester is also capable of tuning the car while its running with a laptop mounted on the passenger seat. Being the first in Sri Lanka for four wheel vehicles, previously a dyno tester was owned by the German Tech for two wheel vehicles, he said.

Mr. Weerasinghe explained that the Dyno Tester is imported from South Africa involving a high cost.
Considered a treadmill for cars and jeeps, the Dyno Tester is capable of getting the car to run at 200km/h while being stationary; and provide the user with details of power of the engine in bhp/ps, torque curve, air/fuel ratio, and helps diagnose faults and engine knocks.

Firstly, the vehicle is strapped from all four sides to the ground to ensure that it will not move when it is running as its wheels are placed onto the rollers at the front and back. An exhaust pipe is fitted in to ensure the smoke emanating from the vehicle is not circulating within the room where the test is conducted but outside.

Following this, the acceleration is checked and the gear selected to calibrate the rollers. Through the computerised system enabled at the testing site the speed range is selected and the result will show the torque and horse power from the engine. The Dyno Tester is also capable of conducting a test to maximise fuel consumption and an emissions test.

It is the only tool that enables the vehicle tuner to drive the vehicle and diagnose faults and ensures the vehicle is running at its optimum as it simulated the road, Mr. Weerasinghe said adding that a power run takes about five minutes.
