The Countdown has begun and the heat his on as vigorous campaigning has commenced from the two teams that are fighting tooth and nail in their bid to wrest control of the crisis ridden Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC).
Upali Dharmadasa who is one of the two contenders (the other being Sumith Perera) contesting for the Post of President was confident that his team will emerge victorious at the election which will be held after six years on January 3.” Everything is moving according to plan, as you know our team is in place and the confidence level is very high. In fact analyzing the scenario today we have noted that things are getting better and the support from the clubs/associations is much more than what we expected at the beginning”.
Following the withdrawal of Thilanga Sumathipala at the eleventh hour Mohan De Silva who is vying for one of the Vice President’s posts and leading the campaign against the Dharmadasa camp expressed confidence that his team is on the right track and has the necessary support from the Clubs to win the election.” We have put forward a team of high profile individuals with unblemished and proven track records who have played the game at the highest level and with considerable experience in Corporate Governance “.
When asked if his team will be able to work with Upali Dharmadasa De Silva replied,”Our endeavor is to transform Sri Lank Cricket once again and redeem it’s dignity and prestige and I am certain that this is also Upali’s vision and plan”.
In fact De Silva had earlier held talks with Upali in a bid to get together the best individuals from both sides and put forward one team. However according to De Silva the request was turned down by Upali who had said that the offer came a little late after he had finalized his team.
Meanwhile Premier Cricket Clubs of the Country who were unable to play the League Tournament as scheduled earlier this week due to the postponement, as a result of the inability of the cash strapped SLC to pay the required tournament fees, have expressed shock at some of the candidates who are seeking nominations at the SLC elections. “We have carefully noted that some individuals who are allegedly to have been partly responsible for the current crisis at SLC are also seeking nominations. This is an unbelievable situation, and we hope that all Premier Clubs and other Associations who have the right to vote will take note of this” |
