Maggona to Dambulla
There is a new boss in Dambulla. This man had been looking after a ground in Maggona earlier and now has been brought in to look after this magnificent Dambulla venue. What experience does he have? The venue at Maggona is nothing much to talk about.
It is also said that he had got the Maggona job earlier because his father was a soothsayer of a former sports boss and on the strength of that he had wormed through to Dambulla. Those in the know are wondering what sort of results this individual can produce!
Three-in-all affair
A top level examination was held recently to find judges for a popular local sport. The examination took place and all those present at the examination hall were surprised to see a lady sitting for the exam.
It is said that this lady had set the papers and had even got them printed and was now even sitting for the exam. It looks as if this was a three-in-all affair.
Fooling whom?
Top officials of a leading sport are supposed to be manufacturing news. It is said that there are two bosses in this sport and both are manufacturing news in order to get them planted in various newspapers. The media are aware of their ploys. But the big question is, whom are they trying to fool?
The missing Big Man
It was a big event, the prize distribution of a cross country event down South. Sadly however no officials were present to give away the awards and the athletes who had sweated to bag the awards were kept guessing as to who will give the awards away.
Normally all the tie clad gentry are present at such functions. The officials who were to be present at the occasion had shown a clean pair of heels to be in the City and only a provincial level chief had given away the awards. In the past the Big Man in Sports was there to give away such awards. We wonder why he was not there this time.
Talking in circles
The debacle of the A team became a topic for conversation at a distant venue between two coaches. One coach wanted to know from the other why the fast bowlers were getting hammered. There was no definite answer. Ultimately the talk was getting nowhere. It was like the popular Sinhala saying: ‘Koheda Yanne, Malle Pol’. No body wanted to get down to the issue and was talking in circles.
No sponsors
A junior sport with great potential for the future is languishing at the moment without sponsors.
The organizers have not been able to get this sport off the ground due to this set back.
It is said that the former sponsors are unable to fork out the funds needed for the tourney because they have apparently spent it on other pressing matters.
The original sponsors have agreed for a four year contract but now snags have cropped up after three years.
What will be the outcome of this situation, sports fans wonder, as a lot depends on this sport especially with the future in mind.
Resting instead of practicing
After the debacle the pressmen were there to find out what action the A team is taking for the next game. They came all ready to see the team in action and were disappointed to see only a handful practicing. Only five or six players were there at the net. When questioned those who were present said that the seniors were tired after the game the previous day and were resting. Shouldn’t they be preparing for the next game instead of resting? |
