EdCIL (India) Limited with the endorsement of the Government of India and High Commission of India in Colombo, opens EdCIL – Indian Education Fair 2012 at the Sirimavo Bandaranaike Memorial Exhibition Centre at BMICH in Colombo. The exhibition that continues up to the 19th of February is organized for the second consecutive year and would display the entire spectrum of Indian higher educational opportunities to the local student population while showcasing its best Higher Education Institutes under one roof, in Sri Lanka.
Senior Minister of Scientific Affairs Hon. Tissa Vitharana, who was the chief guest at the opening ceremony, stressed the importance of quality Indian education that will surely support the local students on the long run. India continues to be a popular higher educational destination for Sri Lankan students due to a number of reasons. As our closest neighbor we could reach India easily, the fellow citizens’ nature & culture are almost the same and that will not affect or disturb the students unlike in some western parts of the world and most important fact would be the guaranteed quality of higher education available and the state of the art facilities offered in these higher educational institutes in India, the Minister Vitharana continued to say during his address.
Indian High Commissioner in Colombo, Mr. Ashok K. Kantha, as the Guest of honour who graced the occasion at the opening ceremony was happy to announce the increased number of scholarships granted by The Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India (ICCR – Indian Council for Cultural Relations) to selected Sri Lankan students with excellent academic achievements. Describing further he mentioned that these scholarships offered to Sri Lanka could be spent over a period of 3 years and the selection of candidates is done in consultation with the Ministry of Higher Education, Government of Sri Lanka, to pursue undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD Degrees in some of the leading universities in India. ICCR covers 60 scholarships under its umbrella, offered for undergraduate and post graduate Programmes in Performing and Visual Arts. Subjects include Indian Classical Music, Dance, Painting and Sculpture.
