The yawn at Maitland Place

Thurstan-Isipathana clash fizzles out to a listless draw

As expected the 49th big match encounter between traditional rivals Thurstan and Isipathana concluded at the SSC ground fizzled out to a tame draw yesterday.

The foundation for the draw was laid by Isipathana who batted the whole of day one and then continued to bat for another one hour in the morning session of play on the second day as resuming from their overnight score of 256 for 5 they made 307 for 8 before declaring.

Overnight batsman Deshan Jeyakumar who was unbeaten on 100 added a further 26 runs to make a top score of 126. Deshan’s 232-ball knock comprised 11 boundaries and a six.

Thurstan in their turn was given a flying start by openers Minhaj Jaleel and Sahan Hewawitharana who together added 68 runs before they were separated.

From there on skipper Sajeewa Salgado took over as he along with Ramindu Kumarasinghe and Kavindu Kulasekera guided the side. From 78 for 3 at the lunch they ended the day making a mammoth 331 for 9 which incidentally is the highest score in the series.

Skipper Salgado made a captains knock of 114 and his 125 ball knock included 18 boundaries while Kavindu and Ramindu supported with knocks of 51 and 35 respectively.
