On the 3rd of March 2012 saw the launch of a brand new fully equipped modern workshop in Sri Lanka that specializes in Italian Cars. The company is also the importer of Italian cars and unveiled the stunning Alfa Romeo Spider on that day, pictured here. The concept took shape when a few Alfa enthusiasts felt that there was a pressing need for a high quality maintenance facility for existing Alfa Romeo users as well as many enthusiasts for whom any other brand would simply never do.
The construction and equipping of the workshop began as far back as a year ago. Previously known as Alfatech and run by Indika Wickremesinghe who had himself trained at the Alfa Romeo factory several years ago was the starting point of the Italian Thoroughbred Motor Company also known as ITMC.
The first Alfa Romeo since the previous agent folded in 2004 arrived in Sri Lanka in October 2010 and since then more cars have been coming in to discerning buyers who value driving pleasure, quality engineering and beautiful design above all else. Many folk have justifiably been a little reluctant to buy an Alfa without the backing of a proper workshop facility and readily available spare parts. This worry has been put to rest permanently by ITMC’s investment in the fully equipped workshop, the Alfa and Fiat specific Smart Examiner, parts stocks and training.
The training was carried out by ITMC’s technical collaborators in the UK Monza Sports Tuning located in West Sussex and are an official Alfa service provider and well as a well known tuner of Alfa Romeo cars. The company is headed by Bryn Griffiths who is well known in the UK Alfa circle. Monza has won the no. 01 position in the J.D. Power survey for customer service in the UK for 03 years including 2011.
The opening was inaugurated by director Dhyan Michael Perera who expressed gratitude to those valued customers who ordered the first few Alfas without seeing or touching the car and simply placing their trust in ITMC.
This was followed by the lighting of the traditional oil lamp by ITMCs new car customers who were the guests of honour for the occasion along with Mr. Brian Elias who was an instrumental force in bring Alfa Romeo to Sri Lanka in the early 90’s. This was followed by the unveiling of the surprise of the day, the Beautiful white Alfa Spider you see in the picture.
The Spider
Despite the 2600 and Giulietta Spider before it, the best known model in Alfa’s entire history is the 1966 Duetto Spider that played a leading role in the 1967 Oscar nominated, BAFTA winning, critically acclaimed movie “The Graduate”. Since that movie the Alfa Romeo Spider has been associated with Romance and Stardom.
That Spider stayed in production until 1993 when the 916 series Spider was launched.
The current Spider is based on the Alfa Romeo Brera Coupe and 159 sedan platform and like its predecessors designed and built by world famous design house Pininfarina. This Spider is also the first car to come to Sri Lanka with Alfa Romeos new 1750 Turbo engine that produces 200bhp and 320Nm of torque in this form.
When the wraps came off most of the guest who had no idea what was under, gasped in amazement at the perfect lines of this white Spider. The car looked so stunning that many view that one will have to spend several times more money on another brand to get this kind of attention.
Other notable cars that ITMC imported were also on display. Like the stunning Alfa Red Brera Coupe, The sleek 159 four door sports sedans and the gorgeous award winning Giuliettas, one in special 8C red paint.
