Feature: Mark of a Leader: Act on Your Inner Drive

Business

By Timothy A. Edward

Want to become a leader? Then, we need to get out there and do something because leadership begins with action. If we aspire to lead, then we should start by identifying opportunities where we can make a difference. This could be in our communities, workplaces, or any area that we passionately care about. The key is to step out of our comfort zones and take the first step, no matter how small, silly, insignificant or outrageous that step may seem.

People are inspired by those who are willing to roll up their sleeves and get things done. Our actions demonstrate our commitment, determination, and willingness to take risks and try out new and innovative solutions. This builds credibility and trust, essential qualities for any leader.

Success and Complacency

When we grapple or work in a particular subject area or field for a considerable period of time, be it music, sports, medicine, media, education, engineering, IT, law, HRM, development, psychology, governance, religion etc that will create opportunities for us to meet with significant leaders, champions and advocates who have made a mark in that field.  We will be able to observe and see them in action in close proximity and will be given the rare opportunities to learn from their successes and victories as well as from their failures and challenges.

Once we have worked in a particular field for a good number of years in this manner and made our contribution as well, then we will be ready to share our experiences and learning with others. Talk about the challenges we faced, the solutions we found, and the impact of our efforts. This not only helps others learn from our journey, but also shows that leadership is about perseverance and resilience. Our stories will definitely resonate and motivate others to take their own steps towards leadership.

However, as we reach the pinnacle of our journey and enjoy our successes and victories, sometimes these milestones can make us complacent. Without falling into this trap, we need to keep on encouraging and motivating ourselves to attempt greater heights. It is incumbent upon every leader to keep on improving, because when we get better in our area of expertise, everyone wins, including our followers and all those whom we serve. So, do not get complacent. Keep on improving and enjoy the process and steps that are involved in that climb.

Mind Set of Champions

Have the mindset of champions. They neither set the bar according to external situations nor according to those whom they have beaten. They set the bar according to their inner drive.

As we continue to improve ourselves and share our journey, we will naturally attract followers. People are drawn to leaders who are authentic, passionate, and proactive. They will listen to you, applaud your efforts, and be inspired to follow your lead. Over time, this builds a strong, supportive network that amplifies your impact.

Act on Your Inner Drive

Talent and strength are commendable. They might help us secure a few successes. But ultimately, it is our inner drive and determination that will enable us to sustain our success. During these economically challenging times, our inner drive and determination can make a huge difference in the lives of children, marginalised young people, families that are ravaged by poverty and the elderly who are in need.

How passionate are we about our calling and avocation in life? If we can keep our drive and determination burning, then we will learn from our mistakes, get up from our setbacks, and keep moving forward.  We will be transformed into a force that cannot be stopped by any adversity. We might have very little power, but if we continue to persevere and prevail, then eventually we will conquer every challenge, and will simply become an unstoppable force to recon with.

Leadership is not about waiting for the perfect moment or having all the solutions. It is about taking prompt action without becoming complacent, learning from our experiences, and sharing our story and journey with others. By doing so, we will continue to inspire and empower those around us, creating a ripple effect of positive, transformative and sustainable change. So, dare to get out there, act on your inner drive, your passion, do something meaningful, outstanding and different, and watch as the masses listen, applaud, and follow your lead.
