Colombo shares gained on Wednesday with improved turnover and analysts saying that the market was ‘highly excited’ about the presidential elections tomorrow and the potential winner. President Mahinda Rajapaksa is pitted against his main opponent, former Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena and 17 others, in a election that is too close to call. At the close of the market, turnover improved to Rs. 1.3 billion, a gradual increase since the start of this year. This may change tomorrow owing to the poll. The stock market is closing early tomorrow at 12 noon. Analysts said that traders were placing their bets on both sides posting a win, while some shares were pushed up on those bets. The core All Share Index marginally rose 0.25 per cent to touch 7,438.52 while the S&P SL 20 index gained 0.07 per cent to close at 4,148.32.
