Lankaenews website, a critical Sri Lankan website, has been blocked by the authorities, for the second time since its inception.
The website could not be accessed today (Thursday). According to reports in other news websites, the Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (TRC) of Sri Lanka has directed all Internet service providers to block access to the website.
One report quoted lankaenews as saying the ban was imposed after it published some articles about President Maithripala Sirisena.
There was no independent verification of this claim nor as to why the website is inaccessible to the public
Reports said Lankaenews was banned for a few years under the former Rajapaksa administration. Before the ban, its office came under an arson attack and some of its journalists were taken into Police custody. Its editor Sandaruwan Senadheera, who fled to London citing threats from the Rajapaksa government, still lives in exile.
Reports said at the last Presidential election, Lankaenews strongly supported President Sirisena. – ENDS -
